Review: The Duke's Rules of Engagement by Jennifer Haymore

Synopsis

Some matches are made in hellā€¦

Joanna Porter loves being one of Londonā€™s hottest up-and-coming matchmakers. But her heavenly vocation is about to turn into a nuptial nightmareā€”thanks to the Duke of Crestmont. Heā€™s as handsome as he is insufferable and obsessed with all things proper. Matching him would cement Joā€™s status as Englandā€™s greatest matchmaker. Except, of course, the impossible-to-please duke refuses all of her most eligible ladiesā€¦confirming his status as a complete and utter pain in her petticoats.

The Duke of Crestmont canā€™t believe he needs a matchmakerā€”let alone this spitfire of a woman whose kissable mouth and dancing, impertinent gray eyes tease him ruthlessly. But the people of his estate are counting on him to find a duchess. A proper lady with a flawless pedigree and immaculate deportment. So why canā€™t he stop himself from wanting his pert, lively matchmakerā€¦instead of the perfect duchess?

Now the entire ton is watching as this determined, audacious matchmaker takes on the most powerful man in London in USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Haymoreā€™s lively new Regency romp. And this show might just be the most outrageous one yetā€¦

Review

It's a steamy and fun historical fiction with lovable characters. Historical romance novels are always so interesting, but more so when authors break rules. I love unconventional stories set in the past. That's why I enjoyed this book.

Joana Porter is a matchmaker and a very successful one at that. It might be how she earns her living, but the truth is that she is a romantic at heart. She doesn't just find a match for her clients, she actually makes sure that they fall in love. So far, all of her clients are blissfully happy and that makes her happy too. Then, she is presented with a challenge: a client who neither believes in nor wants a love match. He just wants a "perfect duchess." Will Jo be able to please this difficult client or is this a recipe for disaster? Only time will tell.

The Duke of Crestmont must marry, not because he wants to, but simply because it's his duty. So, when someone recommends a matchmaker, he thinks why not? That is until he meets the said matchmaker, now he is even more doubtful. Still, of all the things he envisioned, love definitely wasn't one of them. What will happen to his careful plans of marrying a perfect woman? Or is he about to get betrayed yet again?

Overall, an interesting story. I enjoyed reading it, but if I'm honest, I found some parts dragging and skipped a little. Hence, the four stars rating. My problem is that I like to read books in as few sittings as possible. That's why it's not easy to keep me entertained. Anyhow, I'm glad I picked up this book and would recommend it to romance & historical fiction lovers.

P.S. I received a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley. The review is my honest opinion about it and left voluntarily.
